The athletics world mourns the loss of Kipyegon Bett, the former World 800m Under-20 Champion and 2017 Bronze Medalist.

Bett passed away on Sunday at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya, after a prolonged battle with illness. He was just 26 years old.

Bett’s sister, Purity Kirui, revealed that her brother succumbed to liver and kidney failure following a lengthy illness.

The young athlete’s untimely death has sent ripples through the track and field community, leaving many to reflect on his meteoric rise and tragic fall.

Kipyegon’s Suffered Depression After He Was Issued a 4 Years Ban

Kirui disclosed that Bett had been grappling with severe depression since 2018 when the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) imposed a four-year ban on him for doping violations. This setback appeared to have derailed not only his promising career but also his personal life.

“He suffered deep depression and has been engaging in alcoholism due to frustrations,” Kirui stated, shedding light on the mental health struggles that often remain hidden in the world of competitive sports.

Kipyegon’s Rapid Health Conditions

The family recounted Bett’s rapid health decline in recent days:

  1. A week ago, he was admitted to Litein Hospital after vomiting blood.
  2. He was discharged but scheduled to return for further treatment.
  3. Last Friday, his condition worsened dramatically, prompting his transfer to Tenwek Hospital.
  4. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Bett passed away around noon on Sunday.

The Bett family, still reeling from the shock, plans to announce burial arrangements in the coming days.
