The announcement came from Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, as thousands of protesters stormed the prime minister’s official residence in the capital city of Dhaka.
Shortly after her resignation, Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka and landed at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, India. Reports suggest she may be heading to London soon.
The resignation follows a weekend of intense violence that left dozens dead. On Sunday alone, at least 91 people were killed, including 13 police officers, marking the bloodiest day in Bangladesh’s recent protest history.
The military leader by the name General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed to run the country. He called for peace and promised to address the protesters’ demands.
The protests initially began as a student-led movement against a 30% reservation in government jobs for relatives of freedom fighters. However, they escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations demanding Hasina’s resignation
The country experienced widespread chaos as protesters vandalized the prime minister’s residence, and reports indicate that the house of Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was set on fire in Dhanmondi, an upscale area of Dhaka.
According to ‘The Daily Star’, Bangladesh’s leading daily, the death toll in anti-government protests has crossed 300 in just three weeks, making it the bloodiest period in the country’s civil movement history.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a near-total national internet shutdown, limiting the flow of information and communication.
