Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza during a previous event

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been removed from office after the Kenya Senate upheld her impeachment on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. This marks the third attempt to impeach Mwangaza since she took office in August 2022, and the first successful one.

The Main Charges Against Mwangaza

The Senate found Mwangaza guilty on three charges:

1. Gross violation of the Constitution and other laws (26 senators in favor, 4 against, 14 abstaining)

2. Gross misconduct (26 in favor, 4 against, 14 abstaining)

3. Abuse of office (27 in favor, 1 against, 14 abstaining)

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced, “Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Government Act, and Standing Order 86 of the Senate Standing Orders, the Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County, and the governor accordingly ceases to hold office.”

The charges against Mwangaza included illegally revoking an appointment, misleading the public about funds raised after a murder, and irregularly paying allowances to medical staff.

In her defense, Mwangaza recounted her efforts to reconcile with county leaders after previous impeachment attempts. “I traveled across Meru, apologizing to anyone I may have wronged. At one point, I said sorry 70 times—69 to each MCA and once to the Speaker,” she stated.

Meru Governor Speaks After She Was Impeached by Senate

Following the Senate’s decision, Mwangaza took to social media with a message of faith and resilience, saying, “Today, the Lord will fight for you and your household, he will give you permanent victory in every area of your life.”

Mwangaza becomes the third governor in Kenya to be removed from office through impeachment, following Ferdinand Waititu of Kiambu and Mike Sonko of Nairobi in 2020. The Constitution provides an avenue for her to appeal the Senate’s decision through legal channels.
