The Photo of Susan Metah—A Kenyan HIV/AIDS Counselor and Gospel Minister Sharing her Depressed Moments as an AIDS Victim

“My name is Susan Wairimu Metta. I am 40 years old, HIV positive, and living life to the fullest.

My journey with HIV began on January 16, 2019, when I tested positive and started medication the same day.

Like anyone, I was initially shocked by the diagnosis, but I chose to rise above my circumstances. Life was never promised to be perfect or easy, but our perspective on our situations can make all the difference.

We all face challenges, but it’s how we view and respond to them that truly matters. I chose to live positively, seeing my situation as less burdensome than other chronic illnesses like cancer.

Unlike many diseases, HIV treatment is provided for free, and the key to managing it lies in acceptance and self-love.

From the start, I decided to ignore the negative opinions of those who thought I should be ashamed.

These critics, who also engage in sexual activity, have no right to judge me. Instead of viewing my diagnosis as a death sentence, I saw it as a new lease on life. This mindset shift was crucial for my mental and emotional well-being.

I am grateful to God for this journey, as it has been one of immense personal growth. I have learned to love myself anew, to value myself, and to prioritize my well-being.

I refuse to let the ideologies and mindsets of others dictate who I am. My illness does not define me, and I reject the notion that it is a sin or a curse.

This journey has made me a stronger and more resilient person. I love the individual I have become, even if many people do not understand my transformation. Their lack of understanding does not bother me; I am content with who I am.

For anyone out there feeling hopeless or concerned about the opinions of others, remember that you have the power to shape your future.

Life is not for the faint-hearted but for those who choose to rise above their challenges. Keep fighting, maintain your faith, and value yourself. Do not let your circumstances define you or make you feel less worthy.

In conclusion, life is about embracing who you are, loving yourself, and not allowing others to dictate your worth. No matter the challenges you face, you have the strength within you to overcome them and live a fulfilling life.”
