Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has received back some of his security team, according to Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa. This comes a week after Gachagua expressed fears about his safety.
The development was noticed when Gachagua attended a church service at Saint James ACK Cathedral in Kiambu County with more security officers than in recent days. Security officers have also been posted to guard his Karen home.
Just last week, Gachagua was in the hospital during his Senate trial and later complained about having his security removed. He also claimed he was blocked from attending the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale County.
Speaking at the church service, Gachagua addressed President Ruto directly, showing signs of their broken relationship. “We forgive but we don’t forget,” he said, adding that people won’t forget what’s happening now, just like they remember past difficult times under colonial rule and former President Moi’s leadership.
The changes come after a tough period for Gachagua’s office, where 108 staff members were sent on forced leave. Some workers were even turned away when they tried to go to work at Harambee House Annex in Nairobi.
Gachagua was joined at the church service by several allies, including Senators Cleophas Malala, John Methu, and Joe Nyutu.
Senator Thang’wa has called on the government to also bring back Gachagua’s office workers, saying “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.”
