Faith Kipyegon after disqualified for women’s finals

In a dramatic turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon has been reinstated as the silver medalist in the women’s 5000m final, this is after she was disqualified but the appeal by Athletics Kenya went successful.

This decision cements a historic 1-2 finish for Kenya in the event, with Beatrice Chebet claiming gold in a stunning upset.

“I was in front and she tried to come in front and I told her (please) you will push me inside, come slowly I will excuse you and she kept pushing and she put me in an awkward situation. I did not push anyone,” said Kipyegon.

Beatrice Chebet clinched gold with a time of 14:28.56, while Faith Kipyegon secured silver in 14:29.60, showcasing Kenya’s prowess in long-distance running.

Kipyegon was initially disqualified for an alleged obstruction involving Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay. The disqualification was swiftly appealed and overturned by Kenyan officials.

Chebet’s unexpected victory came as she surged past Kipyegon in the final 60 meters of the race, delivering a thrilling conclusion to the event.

The reinstatement pushed Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands to bronze, while Italy’s Nadia Battocletti returned to fourth place.

Despite the emotional rollercoaster, Kipyegon remains focused on defending her 1500m title, with heats beginning on Tuesday.

The race itself was a masterclass in tactical running, with the Kenyan trio of Chebet, Kipyegon, and Margaret Chelimo breaking away from the pack after the bell.

The final sprint saw Chebet unleash an unexpected burst of speed to overtake the favored Kipyegon.

This victory marks Kenya’s first medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, breaking their drought and firmly establishing their presence on the medal table.

It also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting track and field program for the Kenyan team.

Kipyegon’s reinstatement not only salvages personal glory but also underscores the importance of fair play and proper adjudication in Olympic sports.

Her focus now shifts to the 1500m event, where she aims to secure an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic title.
