A social media storm in Kenya over the whereabouts of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has finally been put to rest, as she reveals she’s been away on maternity leave. The announcement comes after three months of public speculation and growing concern from local residents.
The mystery deepened when a playful “Missing Person” poster began circulating online, describing the 51-year-old governor as “last seen boarding a plane to the USA.” The humorous poster even quipped that someone should inform her that “the USA was not Nakuru County.”
Through her Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenya, Kihika addressed the public’s concerns: “I want to first of all assure the people of Nakuru that I am well and currently on maternity leave.” She emphasized that county operations continue smoothly under Deputy Governor David Kones’ leadership.
The governor’s absence became particularly noticeable during the 2024 holiday season, breaking from her tradition of hosting festive gatherings with her husband Sam Mburu at their Rongai home.
While Kihika has maintained some presence on social media, particularly Facebook, where she shares updates about county projects, she hasn’t appeared in person at recent events.
Kihika assured residents she’ll return to her official duties “within the next few weeks” as her maternity leave concludes.
Her last major public communication was a congratulatory message to her predecessor, Lee Kinyanjui, on his appointment as Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade, and Industry.
