Senators raised tough questions about the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday night. They wondered if the motion was truly from Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse or if someone else was behind it.

The questions came after Mutuse was grilled by Gachagua’s lawyers during the impeachment trial. Mutuse had listed 11 reasons why he thinks Gachagua should be removed from office. He said Gachagua broke the law by saying only people with “shares” in Kenya would benefit from the government.

But as Gachagua’s lawyers questioned Mutuse, many senators started to doubt the reasons for the impeachment. They asked if the claims were based on facts or just political games.

Senator Enoch Wambua from Kitui asked, “Is this really your motion? I’m asking because you can’t seem to prove anything. Did someone just ask you to sign this motion and defend it here?”

Mutuse said the motion was indeed his. He explained that as an MP, it’s his job to watch over government officials like the Deputy President.

Other senators also had concerns:

  • Senator Karungo Thang’wa asked how Mutuse got certain documents, wondering if they were obtained legally.
  • Senator Joe Nyutu questioned why only the Deputy President’s wealth was being looked into and not the President’s.
  • Senator Veronica Maina asked about any ongoing cases against Gachagua for money laundering.

Gachagua has said he’s not guilty of any of the 11 charges against him. This is the first time in Kenya’s history that a deputy president faces impeachment.

The Senate will continue the hearing on Thursday. They’ll question more witnesses and hear from Gachagua himself before making a decision.
